From 1971 to 1998 the site of Tell Deinit, an ancient center located in north-western Syria in the vicinity of the modern town of Idlib, was regularly excavated by a Syrian archaeological mission directed by Shawqi Shaath. Between 2002 and 2004 a cooperation programme financed by the EU (MEDA Project n° 15) was launched to support various restoration and training projects and, within this framework, an Italian team worked at Tell Deinit filing, documenting and restoring the materials recovered by the Syrian mission.
Field activities were also carried out in different areas in order to implement data and re-assess the chronological sequence of the site. A preliminary report on these activities was published in 2011 in the volume Archaeology for Cooperation. Afis-Deinit and the Museum of Idlib. Activities in the frame of the MEDA project edited by M. Rossi, and a complete edition of the collected data is the scientific goal of which this volume on coins represents an initial contribution.
